INTERNATIONAL CREDENTIALS EVALUATION

One of the major difficulties that new immigrants, refugees, and international students face in Canada is getting their foreign credentials recognized. The good news is that qualification assessments can be evaluated for all levels of education completed outside of Canada, which could then be used for immigration, professional, and study purposes. If you are planning to get your credentials evaluated in Canada, be sure to do some research about what documents you need because Credential Assessment in Canada can be costly and the process can take some time as well, especially if you have to courier documents back-and-forth between Canada and your home country.

In terms of the employment sector, Canada has two major types of occupations: regulated and non-regulated. Depending on which type of occupation you are pursuing, you may or may not require Canadian equivalencies. For instance, if you are targeting a regulated occupation in Canada such as a lawyer, a doctor, a nurse, or a skilled trade, which is controlled by provincial and territorial law such as nursing, skilled trades; your credential will be assessed by a regulatory body. On the other hand, non-regulated occupations do not require special licensure and can range from having extensive education and training to those requiring minimal formal training such as a Computer Programmer, Bookkeeper, or Sales Representative, etc., for which there is no legal requirements or restrictions on practice such as having licenses and registrations, it is at the employer’s discretion to ask for Canadian equivalencies.

The Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) uses Educational Credential Assessment reports to authenticate international credentials and determine Canadian equivalencies. Below is a list of organizations and professional bodies that have been approved by the CIC:
