New Immigrants Leaving Canada – The Reasons
New Immigrants Leaving Canada – The Reasons By: Newcomer Support Canada | Tuesday, July 1, 2025 Happy Canada Day! Did you know that Canada turns 158-years old today? Canadians across the country ad abroad will come together to reflect on their shared identity. There will be celebrations from coast-to-coast and free activities– community events, parades, concerts, and fireworks. People will celebrate with families and friends, and participate in festivities across Canada. We all know that Canada is a beautiful country that offers tremendous opportunities for career advancement and quality of life. However, amidst the celebration and acknowledgment of the benefits of living in Canada, there are some people, including new Canadians who have left Canada. It is true that with speculations and news on social media, it has been reported than immigration policies have changed since 2024 and Canada has seen some of its residents leave; but peoples’ circumstances and reality speaks otherwise. According to Statistics Canada, 93% of immigrants aged 25-54, who came to Canada between 2012 and 2012 are still here. While this proves the retention, there was another study conducted by Statistics Canada that showed that over 15% of immigrants that arrived in Canada between 1982 – 2017 left within 20-years; but this is particularly true for people born in countries that offer higher standards of living. Those people that do leave Canada do so in the early years – meaning within three to seven years of their arrival. Canada still has one of the highest immigration levels and there are opportunities and quality of life that drives more immigrants and newcomers to explore and make Canada their home. More than 400,000 new immigrants arrived in Canada in 2022, and this population rose by about 1.3 million by January 1, 2024. In fact, the number of temporary residents (most of who are foreign workers) rose significantly, which received a lot of criticism. Canada has always attracted immigrants, but it is time the government reassessed who they attract – educated and entrepreneurial talent. There has been a lot of challenges in the area of immigration as well. Frauds and Scams for the purpose of Permanent Residency in Canada is not hidden, particularly with International Students and Foreign Workers on LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment). While this is something that can be debated, but there is no denying the fact that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is working towards building a stronger economy. Ipso facto, let’s explore factors why people leave Canada that may or may not influence your decision: High Expectations – The first few years as a newcomer is usually a struggle, therefore, having expectations of finding a suitable job and buying a house in the first year is not realistic. Everything takes time but with consistent efforts, it is possible to have a career-oriented job and buy a home eventually. Unrealistic Goals – Setting goals that are far-fetched or merely a dream can lead to disappointment as the grass always looks greener on the other side. Facing hardships is common to newcomers, and with realistic goals that are achievable in both short-term and long-term can be a good strategy. Weather Conditions – Canada is a cold country and the weather is often unpredictable, and not everyone can adjust to the harsh weather, especially if that lasts for 6-8 months of the year. Health Concerns – The initial years may lead to depression for some, and other medical conditions are also common; but Canadians lead an active lifestyle and there are many services and support available to not only be aware but also practice a healthy lifestyle. Financial Challenges – Inflation is a realty globally, and Canada is no different. Not everyone in Canada is rich as lack of financial literacy is also common. With greater wealth comes more taxes; but with time and effort along with proper financial decisions, you can not only get stable but also plan for the future. This includes savings for yourself and your retirement, education planning for children, and investments for financial growth. Expensive Housing – Whether you choose to rent or buy a real estate property, housing market in Canada is expensive. Not only is it sometimes difficult to qualify for a mortgage due to lack or credit history in Canada, newcomers often overwork and pay high taxes to make ends meet and to live the dream of owning a home. Unable to Restart – Life in Canada is challenging and if you have recently moved or planning to move to Canada, starting over may not be a pleasant experience for all. While some people adapt quickly and grow, others struggle to find a job that can be of the same esteem as their home country – but gradually over time you adapt. Hopefully the above-mentioned factors give you an idea of what to expect when planning your move to Canada. Setting the right goals and expectations can allow you to avoid the pitfalls that some newcomers face. In closing Tags: Why are people leaving Canada, Leaving Canada.
